The war in Ukraine and ensuing sanctions has forced some Eurasian rail freight shippers to reconsider their logistics options. In this session, we will assess how far the recent geopolitical turmoil has applied the brakes to the previously burgeoning China – Europe rail freight market, and how rail can retain its now-established foothold in the face of competition from other modes.
Key areas of focus for the discussion will include how far the ‘classic’ transit routes through Kazakhstan, Russia and Belarus are still viable, and whether alternative rail and sea options through the so-called ‘Middle Corridor’ hold significant potential to support future rail growth. We will identify key success in Eurasian rail transit freight from the past decade, and set out the critical challenges that need to be overcome in the years ahead to allow rail services to flourish on the ‘New Silk Road’.
